About Doodly Doodle
An idea I keep
coming back to.
I’m Simon Breslav. I live in Toronto with my wife and son. I’m the CTO of Trax, I practice Zen, and I’m building Doodly Doodle in my spare time.
Ink and watercolor are my favorite media. I want drawing on a screen to have some of that same satisfaction: the feel of making a mark, watching it take shape, and following it somewhere unexpected.
Twenty years, more or less.
I’ve wanted to make this app for about twenty years. The first prototype was written in Java. Then I rewrote it in Flash. Later, I tried again in JavaScript. Now I’m giving Swift, iOS, and the iPad a shot.
The tools have changed. The idea has stayed with me.
The process is part of the work.
I don’t want to make just another drawing app. I want the satisfying experience of physical drawing, with the possibility of creating something that couldn’t exist without a computer.
For Doodly Doodle, that means a painting that can move. Motion belongs to the marks you make, rather than a separate animation process. There are no keyframes or traditional animation tools. Just painting.
The time spent making it should matter as much as the finished piece. That’s the idea I’m still working toward, one spare evening at a time.
Simon
